The small church, Minjasafnskirkjan, located in Akureyri’s old town, was originally built in 1846.

It is a typical Icelandic country church, made of wood and painted with pitch, a tar-like substance used to protect the wood from water and decay.

The church was originally located on the other side of the fjord, near the village of Svalbarðseyri, but in 1970, it was moved to Akureyri and installed in the garden of the Akureyri Museum. After undergoing extensive repairs, the church was rededicated on December 10, 1972, and has since served as a museum, a place of worship, and a venue for special events.
