Arriving with a Cruise Ship?

Akureyri is a popular cruise ship destination. Most ship arrive from May until end of September, but we also receive some at other times of the year.
In this chapter we try to answer the most common question asked by cruise ship passengers visiting our town.

Akureyri is a small town even though it is big in Icelandic context.  There are about 20.000 inhabitants in town and as it is the main town outside the capital area, it offers quite extensive services, such as stores, restaurants, museums, activities, hospital, international airport ect.
Distances in Akureyri are quite small and most cruise ships doc very close to the town's center or in about 10 minutes' walk. For more details regarding  harbours, cruise ship arrivals and distances look at:
Map of Akureyri and ports (map will be added soon) meanwhile you can use this Map
List of cruise ship arrivals

Most cruise ships offer a wide selection of tours and activities for their passangers to choose from while visiting that are adapted to the stop at each port. But some passengers like to organize their own adventure or even rent a car during their stay.
Below we have made a list of companies offering tours and activities which you can contact and make your own arrangements.  There you also find a list of car rentals in town. If you want to see what are the main sights in town and in the surrounding area - look here.
Attention! On busy cruise days demand for service can be extremely high and tours, taxis or rent a car - hard to find.
