The 11th. November is a day which is celebrated annually in Grímsey, to commemorate Daniel Willard Fiske (November 11, 1831 – September 17, 1904) who was an American librarian and scholar.
Mr. Fiske sailed pass the island in the 1870s and was intrigued by the lifestyle of the inhabitants and their love of chess. It prompted him to donate a chess set to every home, books so the islanders would have their own library and a considerable amount of money to the community to support their future ventures.
A new exhibition to honour Mr. Fiske was opened on this occasion last Thursday and will be viewable to visitors for the years to come.
