The national day of Iceland was celebrated yesterday. Iceland broke away from Denmark in 1944, and ever since, the nation has celebrated its independence on the 17th of June, the birthday of the freedom fighter Jón Sigurðsson. Sigurðsson, a prominent leader in Iceland's struggle for independence, is considered a national hero.

The main ceremony took place in and around the Botanical Gardens in warm and tranquil weather.
