Slide presentation of ‘Rozome’ and ‘Katazome’ Japanese Resist Dye Painting Process on Saturday, April 26, 2025 15:00 | Deiglan Gallery, Kaupvangsstræti 23
This April, the Gilfélag Society welcomes American artist Linda Berkley to its artist residency program.
“I have long dreamed of returning to Iceland. My last experience was as an Artist-in-Residence in Iceland ten years ago. I have remained profoundly moved by my exposure to the striking scale and scope of the Icelandic landscapes/seascapes/skyscapes and its influences on Icelandic culture and artistic perspectives.
Linda presently works with ‘Rozome’ or ‘Roketsuzome’ and ‘Katazome’ (Japanese resist dye painting techniques), and natural pigments; exploring a brilliance of color relationships, a balance of design untethered by western perspective, and line quality. She follows her observations as they translate into visual pattern, symbol, and expression; a correspondence between her inner and outer world.”
Berkley will present her exhibition “Untethered” at Deiglan Gallery on April 26 and 27, from 14:00–17:00 each day, showing her studies using drawing, watercolor, and experimental Japanese resist dye painting (‘Rozome,’ based in traditional kimono design). Linda Berkley will also give a slide presentation of her work explaining the process of the Japanese resist dye painting techniques ‘Rozome’ and ‘Katazome’ on Saturday, April 26th at 15:00.
Linda Berkley is a visual artist residing in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and cat, working in her studio and in nature, www.lindaberkley.com, in celebration of creative process and the power of observation.
Retired from teaching after 27 years as a college art professor, Linda’s education includes BFA Museum School of Fine Arts, Boston, MFA University of Arizona, and Scientific Illustration certificate from University of Washington. In addition to Iceland, she has attended residencies in Japan, DrawInternational France, Vermont Studio School and Anderson Ranch, Colorado.
