The hike begins at Reykjahlíð in the Mývatn area. The route mostly follows paths and trails through lava fields, which are rough and uneven in some places. The guide will provide information and education about the geology and other features of the area as circumstances allow.

The group will take a gentle trail up Hverfjall, walk along the crater's rim to the southern side, and descend via a steep path with loose sand. From there, the hike continues on a trail through the lava field into Dimmuborgir. Participants who prefer not to ascend Hverfjall can take an easy path around the mountain and meet the group when they come down.

It can be helpful to bring walking poles and wear sturdy shoes. Car transportation will need to be arranged by participants.
