Magnificent Mendelssohn: Romance and Passion
The Violin Concerto – often regarded as the most beautiful in the world – will be performed at Hamraborg in Hof by Helga Diljá Gunnarsdóttir.
The Italian Symphony – a musical portrait of Italy in tones.
Fingal's Cave Overture – Mendelssohn paints a picture of the waves of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the columnar basalt walls of Fingal's Cave. The cave itself has a particularly impressive acoustic space.
This event is supported by VERÐANDI Arts Fund, a collaborative project between Akureyri Municipality, Hof Cultural Centre, and Akureyri Cultural Society.
Akureyri Orchestra is a new platform for hobby and instrumental musicians in the area. The orchestra held its first concert on December 11, 2023, at Akureyri Church, with a full house and enthusiastic applause. Admission was free, but voluntary donations were collected for Food Donations in Akureyri and Surroundings. The musicians ranged from ages 13-75, coming from various cultural backgrounds, showing that the participants' backgrounds were diverse. All came together for the joy of playing and meeting others with similar interests.
In the spring of 2024, the orchestra held a Grieg concert supported by the VERÐANDI Arts Fund MAK, in cooperation with the Amateur Orchestra of Reykjavik, Akureyri Male Choir - Geysir, Eyjafjord Male Choir, and young pianist Styrmir Þey Traustason, which received positive reviews.
The Akureyri Orchestra plans charity concerts in early December, similar to last year's event, and concerts in Hamraborg in Hof on June 8, 2025, with Helga Diljá Gunnarsdóttir performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, among other pieces.
The orchestra’s activities are primarily characterized by a love of music and friendly interactions between participants, where everyone is welcome on their own terms.
