The Johannine Passion by Bach, often referred to as the "queen of all musical works," will be performed by the Sinfonia Orchestra of Northern Iceland, the Choir of Akureyri Church, the Chamber Choir of Northern Iceland, and a stellar group of soloists during Holy Week.
The piece narrates the final moments of Christ's Passion as told in the Gospel of John. It focuses on His arrest, trial, crucifixion, and eventual death. In the Johannine Passion, the storyteller sings the narrative, while the choirs and soloists portray the characters of the story. Interwoven throughout the drama are arias and choral segments that delve into the emotions evoked by the Gospel's themes, offering a deeper exploration of the account than what is presented directly in the biblical text.
