The route starts with a drive east to Ljósavatnsskarð, where cars are parked at the farm Stórutjarnir. The hike begins through heathland and gravel slopes, followed by a steep grassy ascent to Nónskál and then up to Kambur. From there, the hike continues easily to Stóradalsfjall (809 m). The descent follows the Fjallshólar route down to Níphólstjörn and back to Stórutjarnir. This hike offers beautiful views over the countryside, Ljósavatnsskarð, and Ljósavatn.
