FFA's annual trip to the national mountain Herðubreið (1,682 m). We will stay in the FFA cabin at Drekagil or camp nearby. It is necessary to use vehicles that can access the trailhead of Herðubreið. It’s possible to carpool, so it’s good to let us know if anyone can take passengers. Helmets are required safety equipment, and you must also bring crampons and an ice axe for safety.
Day 1, Friday: Departure from Akureyri at 17:00. Drive to Drekagil, where we will stay overnight. There may be a short evening walk around the area, if desired.
Day 2, Saturday: Hike up Herðubreið. Stay again in Drekagil for the night.
Day 3, Sunday: Return trip. There are many sights in Drekagil, and participants will have the chance to explore the area before heading back to Akureyri. Expected arrival in Akureyri in the late afternoon.
The hike to Herðubreið is short (6 km up and down) but steep (1,000 m elevation gain). The hike itself can take 6 to 7 hours.
The guide will contact participants ahead of the trip regarding gear and other details.
