Family Beach Cleanup

During the Children's Culture Festival, Amtsbókasafnið and Ocean Missions invite cheerful kids and their families to participate in a beach cleanup near Akureyri.

All participants will be provided with refreshments to enjoy by the shore.

These cleanups often reveal various materials that we don’t want in the ocean or on the beach but that can be great for creating art! Examples include fishing buoys, floats, net scraps, and various plastic and metal waste.

The following day, a recycling art workshop will be held at Amtsbókasafnið, where children can create artworks using materials they or others collected from the beach. All supplies will be provided, including paint, Posca markers, glue guns, and glue sticks.

There will also be a short, child-friendly educational session about marine life in Eyjafjörður and the importance of caring for our ocean.

After the workshop, an exhibition featuring the children’s artwork will be set up and remain on display throughout April.

This event is also part of Week 17, a library initiative raising awareness about the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
