The drive begins at Hverfjall, with departure at 9:30 AM. The route heads south along Lúdentsborg and east past Hvannfell. The hike starts from Hvannfell, crossing a flat lava field (with a stop at Lofthellir cave), continuing east along the base of Búrfell to the south. The hike ascends Búrfell via steep scree, up through a lava ridge at the mountain edge, and up to the summit. The same route is taken back. On the return, the path goes through the lava field, south of Sauðahnjúkur, and north of Hvannfell back to the parking lot.
