Valley Glerárdalur up to the dam

A hiking/biking route that begins by the new hydro powerplant by the river Glerá. From there follow the path along the canyon leading all the way up to the dam further up the valley.

Along the lower part of the route you pass two hiking/biking/riding bridges, the club area of the Akureyri Car Club (BA) and snow scooter and motorbike club area (KKA). On the way you find two viewpoints that provide great view to the impressive canyon and some waterfalls. After the club area of the snow scooter and motorbike club a bend is taken around the area of the Gun Club (SA) which is well marked by a fence.

Above the Gun Club area the trail continues along a gravel road, through a gate and turns up the mountain a short distance before taking a turn to the left onto another gravel road leading further into the valley. Follow this road all the way into the valley until you arrive to the dam.
If you find this walk beeing to long you could cross the river along the hike on a hikingbridge just aproximately where you see the parking for the hike to Mt. Súlur on the oposite side of the valley - see photos and postition on the google map below.

When arriving the dam, cross the river on top of the dam-wall and continue up the hill along a steep track. On top of the hill, you find the trail continuing down the valley to the parking lot for Mt. Súlur - thats where we are heading.
(If you fancy a longer walk you could turn right when you have reached the hill and walk further in the valley to the hut Lambi owned by the Akureyri  Touring Club (a additional distance of aprox 8 km one way). Note the hut is locked and a key and payment must be made by the Touring Club office in Akureyri in advance).

From the parking at Mt. Súlur Parking you continue along the road Súluvegur down to the Dairy (we reccomend to take a small detour into the Dairy parkinglot to view the sculpture Auðhumla), Continue the tour and cross the street Þingvallarstræti by the kindergarten Flúðir. Go left and cross the bridge and almost take a full round by the roundabout to head down the path down to the river and to the starting point of the tour.
