Summer Concerts in Akureyri Church is an annual concert series that is held every Sunday in July. The concert series has been held since 1987 and has established itself well. It was the singer Margrét Bóasdóttir and Björn Steinar Sólbergsson, then organist at the Akureyri church, who started the concert series. Each of them had just returned from a long music study abroad and they wanted to create a channel for concerts in the summer. Margrét and Björn took care of the concerts together with their spouses Kristján Valur Ingólfsson and Hrefna Hardardóttir for 5 years. In 1992, it was decided to create the position of manager who was responsible for the preparation and management of the concerts, Hrefna Harðardóttir performed that job until 2008, when Sigrún Magna Þórsteinsdóttir took over. The concert series ran for twelve successful years, under the name Summer Concerts in North Iceland, but starting in 1999 concerts are only held in Akureyri Church and are now called Summer Concerts in Akureyri Church. Jónína Björt Gunnarsdóttir is now in charge of the concert series.
The concert schedule can be found on the event page of Visit Akureyri, on the webpage of Akureyri Church and on the facebook page of the concert series.
