Súlur Vertical offers a spectacular experience for runners and enthusiasts of pristine nature and picturesque surroundings.
The races range from 19 km on trails in the townland up to a 100 km race starting at Godafoss.
Súlur Vertical takes place annually in Akureyri during the first weekend of August (verslunarmannahelgi - the Merchant weekend). The race was first held in 2016 on the initiative of Þorbergur Ingi Jónsson, ultrarunner. The running society "UFA Eyrarskokk" took over the race in 2017 and since 2020 the run is hosted and organized by the Súlur Vertical Association which was founded the same year. The purpose of the association is, among other things, to promote outdoor activities and physical activity, organise events, increase the number and improve off-road paths and markings in the local area of Akureyri, promote the popularity of off-road running, mountain running and other physical activity in nature.
There are four distances included in Súlur Vertical: 100km, 43km, 28km and 19km. The shorter distances start in Kjarnaskógur woods, but the 100km race starts at Godafoss Waterfall.
All the races end in downtown Akureyri. Plus, there's a fun kids' run on Friday in the Kjarnaskógur forest, which is a perfect activity for the whole family.
The event will take place on August 2nd and 3rd 2024.
