The North Iceland Symphony Orchestra was founded in the autumn of 1993 and the first concert was held on October 24, that year, conducted by Guðmundur Óli Gunnarson, who has been the resident conductor ever since.
NISO, starting its 21. year, has grown and thrived and held many concerts. In these years over a hundred different programs have been played, but NISO has played almost all kinds of classical music, from baroque to modern music, in addition to rock, jazz and pop music. One of NISO´s guiding lights has been building a bridge between the audience and the performers and a special focus is placed on warmly receiving concert guests, creating closeness with the audience, for example by educating them about the piece or work being performed each time.
NISO has worked with various different parties in concerts. Projects in cooperation with the Akureyri Music School have been produced every year since 2006 and from the foundation of the orchestra, advanced music students have been given the opportunity to play with the orchestra. NISO has had successful cooperation with the Akureyri Theatre Company in many forms, for example producing the musicals the Sound of Music, and Oliver, in addition to participating in smaller projects.
