The Municipal Library in Akureyri is one of Iceland´s largest libraries. The Municipal Library is situated in a beautiful building at Brekkugata 17. The building is in itself a good reason to visit the library.
The library offers all aspects of traditional library service, such as books, magazines, audio books, DVDs and even boardgames. All Icelandic newspapers are available, and foreign newspapers can be accessed online.
Exhibitions, lectures and all sorts of events are regularly held at the library. During the winter time informal Icelandic lessons/language café takes place at the café on the 1st floor. A social platform for people who want to enhance their skills in Icelandic and meet up in an informal environment. The event takes place every Tuesdays at 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM and is carried out by volunteers. Everyone is welcome.
A variety of programs for children, including Preschool Story time, a summer reading program, and special events are scheduled throughout the year. Check out our calendar on our website or on our Facebook-page. Bæta við hlekkjum! Event descriptions are also available in English, when applicable.
An open wireless network is available for guests and the internet can be accessed in public computers for a small fee. Here you can check your email, call home through Skype or upload photos from your camera.
Material is available in several languages, and can be browsed at the library and/ or borrowed. If you want to check out items from the library you need a library card. To get a library card you need an Icelandic kennitala (an ID number issued by Registers Iceland). If you have a permanent residence at Akureyrarbær and it’s your first librarary card then it’s for free. If you are a guest in town, you can still have a card but you have to pay for an annual fee and have an Icelandic ID-number (kennitala).
At the library store you can buy porcelain mugs, puzzles for childrens, book lights and more. The toys are connected to popular fiction characters, such as the Moomintrolls, Pippi Longstocking, Alfons and more. All quality products.
An Italian café, Orðakaffi, is located at the library, where it is possible to buy lunch at a reasonable price as well as coffee and cakes. The café is open on weekdays at 10 AM to 5 PM.
During the summer the library is open from 8:15 AM to 7 PM every weekday, closed on weekends. During winter it also is open on Saturdays from 11 AM to 4 PM. The Library is only a few minutes walk away from the town center.
